This is a list of the world's countries and their dependent territories by area, ranked by total area.
There are 195 countries in the world today. This total comprises 193 countries that are member states of the United Nations and 2 countries that are non-member observer states: the Holy See and the State of Palestine.
Since South Sudan became an independent state on July 9, 2011, there are now 195 independent sovereign nations in the world (not including the disputed but de facto independent Taiwan), plus some 60 dependent areas, and several disputed territories, like Kosovo.
Links will lead you to the respective One World - Nations Online country information and internet resources page.
The remaining two are non-members known as observer states: Holy See and Palestine. These entities are invited to observe in various activities with limited participation.
